It's been awhile since I've been able to update so I have tons cover! I've been so busy with school and adjusting to the college life that I just haven't been able to get around to my blog! Hopefully now that I'm in the swing of things I will be able to update more frequently!
First of all, I love everything about the University of Minnesota. I couldn't imagine going to any other school! The environment is so motivating; there is just an air about campus that makes me feel like I am a part of something important and I cannot wait to fulfill that! Aside from just loving the campus and life in general here, I'm doing quite well in all my classes and enjoying them on top of that. I am currently enrolled in Intro to Psyc, American Sign Language, Writing, and Religious Studies. I am loving psychology (of course! since it's my major!) and am performing very well in this class; I am proud to say that I got an A on my first college exam for this class! I'm hoping to keep it up! All of my other courses are great as well!
As far as activities and involvement go, I've been getting out there as much as I can so far. During the first week here, I joined a group called "Navigators" (or "Navs" for short), which is a nondenominational christian based organization. All the members are students and we meet once a week for small bible study sessions and then there are also various "hang out" opportunities. It's a great way for me people that share the same values as I do and it's a great way to bring a bit of the "home" feeling to campus. Also, I recently pledged a sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta, which I am so excited about! This is a great opportunity for me to receive more scholarships, network, and volunteer. I absolutely love all the girls and am proud to be a member!
Also, I recently went through the audition process for the Premier Dance Team. Unfortunately, on the last day of practice, which was the day before auditions, I injured my knee. I ended up going to the ER, and thankfully nothing was broken, but it was still pretty severe to the point that the doctors prohibited me from dancing until it healed. Being that there was not a late audition option and that this is the only club dance team, I am unfortunately not dancing right now. I'm super bummed about this but I'm keeping my spirits up in hopes that a new opportunity will arise! I'm definitely not ready to stop dancing!
Next semester, I'm going to apply for an organization called UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program) where, if accepted, I will be paid to conduct real life research with a professor on the topic of my choosing. This is an extremely wonderful opportunity for me since research is my preferred career path; it will give me some great exposure and further direction as to where I want to go with my career. I'm very excited about this and am looking forward to getting started (fingers crossed on being accepted!). Also, I am already looking into studying abroad! I'm would ideally like to go to Ireland during the spring semester of my sophomore year. However, these details are still vague, but it will definitely happen before I graduate! The benefits are just too great to pass up! Overall, I'm loving the opportunities that I've had so far to get involved, but I'm definitely not done; I'm continually looking for more groups!
As for being Miss Vergas, I have had one appearance so far this fall: The Frazee Homecoming Parade. It was so much fun to come home and sit atop the float and see all those familiar faces once again! I also enjoyed getting to see my princess, Leah Wuebben! She's always so much fun to be around! Our little Jr. Prince, Jonathan, is such a cutie pie! He always has something to say and I think his wave is getting better than mine! He was showing me how to do it at this past parade. Overall, I had a great time and can't wait for the next appearance!
Lastly, I have a great little story to share! A few weeks ago, I was on the light rail headed back from the Mall of America with my roommate. I ended up striking up a conversation with a man sitting across from me. His name was Aaron and after talking for awhile, I found out that he was a graduate of the University of Minnesota in 2006. If this wasn't coincidence enough, I also found out that his father-in-law (I believe, although I don't remember the exact relationship) is from Vergas! I was so proud to inform him that I am the current Miss Vergas. It's such a small world that I randomly met someone on the light rail in Minneapolis that is familiar with lil' old Vergas, MN!
Well, that's all the catching up I have for now and hopefully I'll be posting soon with exciting new updates!
Until next time, God Bless!
